Your Website Has About Eight Seconds. Most of Them Are Wasted.

A buyer lands, scans, and decides whether you're worth more time. Almost every B2B SaaS homepage spends those seconds on a headline that says nothing.

A buyer arrives on your homepage from a link a colleague sent. They have roughly eight seconds of patience before deciding whether you're worth more time. Almost every B2B SaaS homepage I audit spends those seconds on a headline that could belong to any company in the category, and then asks for a demo.

Answer the three questions immediately

What is this, who is it for, and why should I care — visible without scrolling and without jargon. That sounds elementary and the majority of homepages fail it, usually by opening with an abstract value claim rather than a concrete description. 'Unlock your team's potential' fails all three. 'Payroll for UK companies with hourly staff' answers all three in six words. The second is less exciting to write and considerably more effective.

Show the product, early and honestly

Buyers want to see the interface. A real screenshot of the actual product does more work than any amount of description, and stylised abstract illustrations do almost none. There's an instinct to hide the product until a demo because the interface isn't beautiful — but a buyer who sees a plain, functional screenshot and understands it is far more likely to book than one who sees three sections of gradient and can't tell what the software does.

  • A real screenshot above the fold, not an abstract illustration
  • The specific buyer named in the first sentence
  • Pricing reachable in one click, even if it's a range
  • The two objections that kill your deals, answered on the page

Stop making everything a demo request

Most B2B sites offer exactly one action, aimed at the small share of visitors ready for a sales conversation. Everyone else has no next step and leaves. Offer a secondary path with a lower commitment — detailed documentation, a recorded product walkthrough, a benchmark tool, a genuinely useful comparison. It captures the majority who are interested but not ready, and it costs one page.

Test it properly, with actual people

Not an A/B test — you don't have the traffic for that to be conclusive, and neither do most companies running them. Instead, find five people who match your ICP and have never seen the site, give them the URL, and ask them to say out loud what the company does and who it's for. Watch in silence. Five sessions will surface more actionable problems than a quarter of conversion optimisation, and you can run them in a week.

Clarity beats cleverness on every B2B homepage I've ever tested. The headline you think is boring is usually the one that works.
